Moisturizing Your Locs in the Winter & Cold Climate

How do you take care of dreads during the winter? How are you going to protect your precious locks of hair this winter? How do you maintain moisture? How do you avoid dry locks or frizzy locs? What hats should you wear? These are a few questions to consider especially for loc newbies in need of a winter loc are routine.

September is always the month that nappy heads begin primping and planning in anticipation for cold weather. How are you going to protect your precious locks of hair?The following has always worked well for me:

1. Baby locks (0-6 months)
Need attention too. Often new lockers will forgo the  moisturizing treaments during the early stages of lockdom, and that's good. But make sure to spritz with some aloe vera juice (organic) treatments and seal with a light oil if your hair is porous and prone to drying out. A light oil such as grape seed oil or jojoba oil will seal the benefits of the moisturizing aloe vera juice, feeding and nourishing your baby locks during the tender days. Only apply the oil once a week. The hair needs to matt and oiling any more than twice can compromise the formation of the foundation.


2. Teenagers (6-18 months)
So, you have teenagers that are defiantly sprouting and pointing and sticking all over the place, they wont stay where you put them and if you dare try to control them, they will lash out in another direction! Well,  teenagers need even more love! So spritz them daily with aloe vera juice and seal them with a medium-weighted oil to seal in the moisture-such as olive oil or walnut oil. The oil should only be applied twice a week.

3. Mature locks (month 18 and beyond)
Many will stop nourishing mature locks, treating them as though they don't need love, nurturing and attention. Well, they do. Continue with the spritz and give yourself a nice treat and seal with castor oil  to lock in the moisture. The oils can be applied every other day without compromising the integrity of the lock.

All of these tips can be applied through the winter months. All year long, locks can be conditioned with herbal tea rinses(dont wash out!). Boil a cup of tea from your favorite herb: hibiscus, chamomile, rosemary and pour into the hair after washing. Follow up with the aloe vera spritz and seal. Add your favorite essential oil to the  aloe vera juice for smell and medicinal benefits always in a ratio of 1 drop per 1 oz. And, always go to sleep with a satin scarf to protect your hair from moisture sapping cotton fibers! A satin pillow case is also extra protection from wrinkles in the face from the moisture-robbing cotton fibers.
