MELODY BOGAN, HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL
What considerations did you have when you began your locking journey? Time, expense, and maintenance. Never workplace as my place of employment is very relaxed and seemingly welcome in its diversity.
Were you concerned about employment perceptions or relational perceptions when locking? Not at all. The culture at my job is welcoming and I've found myself sitting around the table with VIP from various clients and prospective clients. What I found was my knowledge and capacity to care about my job, my peers, and my clients hold more weight than my exterior.
How long have you been locked? 1 year, 5 months
Has being locked ever impacted your chance of employment? To my knowledge, it has not. Nor have I perceived it being an issue. My work group is very eclectic and we're vastly different in our backgrounds, yet work synergistically for our client's benefits. My boss who is Caucasian remarked he thinks my style is beautiful.
Have you ever had a negative experience with employment due to your locks? To date, thankfully no.
What is the best thing that you enjoy about your locking journey? Emerging and rediscovery of my self-confidence.
What is the reason you remain locked? New season of self-exploration and an expression of remembering to care for myself in the midst of ministry, marriage, motherhood, and career.
Is locking spiritual to you or just a hair style? Very much spiritual...it requires commitment and 'water' to thrive as much of my spiritual life requires 'living water'
What gives you the courage to remain locked? Many times is the smile on another sister's or brother's face who too are locked when we pass by each other. A sense of belonging...my newfound confidence and feeling liberated from creamy crack.
What was the worst part of your locking journey? Growing in my confidence w/ styling and my freaking arms hurt w/ solo maintenance...some doubts that I utterly 'suck at it'.
If there was one description that you could share about your locks that embodies how you feel about having locks, what would that word be? Liberated/Empowered
